Saul Leiter (1923–2013) was an American photographer and painter, best known for his pioneering use of color in street photography during the 1940s and ’50s. His work stands out for its poetic framing, layered reflections, and abstract compositions that often obscure rather than reveal. Leiter’s images feel more like quiet visual jazz than reportage—personal, lyrical, and emotionally intuitive. Long overlooked, his legacy now resonates as a bridge between painting and photography, where mood often triumphs over narrative.
